Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Musa Mohamad was a distinguished Malaysian academic, university administrator, and government minister who made major contributions to higher education and national education policy. He was best known for serving as Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and later as Malaysia's Minister of Education.

Musa Mohamad was born on 29 November 1943 in Bagan Datuk, Perak, Malaysia.

His academic qualifications are :

• Bachelor of Pharmacy, University of Singapore ( National University of Singapore), 1964.
• Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Technology, University of London, completed with distinction in 1972.
• He received the Abbott Prize for outstanding academic performance

After serving in Malaysia's Ministry of Health as a pharmacist, Musa joined USM in 1975 as the founding Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

He subsequently held several senior academic positions :

• Dean, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1975–1979)
• Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)
• Vice-Chancellor of USM (1982–1998)

During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, USM experienced significant expansion in:

• Medical sciences education
• Engineering education, including aerospace engineering
• Research infrastructure
• International academic reputation

Tan Sri Musa Mohamad died on 8 June 2024 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, aged 80, after suffering from multiple myeloma (blood cancer). His passing was widely mourned by Malaysia's academic community and former colleagues.
